You’re probably feeling a little daunted about taking the PSAT; that’s normal. It’s probably the first time you’ve ever taken such an important test before (unless, of course, you have one of those really hard teachers whose tests make you feel like working outside in 120 degree weather would be preferable).

Homeschooling is a great learning setting for some students, but since they’re not around a traditional school setting where the PSAT is promoted, they probably have questions about the test and how it benefits them.

One of the biggest questions educators have about SAT test prep is regarding the importance of the PSAT test. The PSAT is a practice test that is taken in the spring of a student’s sophomore year or fall of their junior year. Since it doesn’t count for the official SAT score, many students wonder if they should spend their time taking one of the many PSAT tests offered each year.

Many parents believe that having their children take a "trial" SAT---that is, an SAT in November or December for which their junior-year students sit without preparing---is a good idea. For several reasons, this is a dangerous assumption. Below, we explain why taking an SAT cold cannot possibly help, and may very well hurt, your child.

PSAT: Pervasive Stress & Anxiety Test

PSAT anxietyEven though it’s been over 10 years, I remember the days leading up to taking the PSAT very well.  I was incredibly anxious, even though I knew the PSAT was merely a ‘practice SAT,’ I wanted to perform well. Fortunately, I had practiced many SAT questions prior to taking the PSAT and spent one of my summers before my sophomore year prepping for the SAT.  So even if I didn’t feel 100% confident and still had pre-test jitters, I knew I could tackle most of the content.  It's a cliché, but it's true: practice makes perfect.

Last month I had the honor of presenting information about the PSAT to three Clear Creek ISD high schools, Clear Creek HS, Clear Brook HS, and Clear Falls HS, during their PSAT nights. At each of the presentations I was asked to present information to students and their parents about their PSAT results, specifically the PSAT score report that is provided. For those of you who were not lucky enough to attend one of these presentations in person I thought I would recap the major points of the presentations.

The PSAT is a test that is given in October every year and it is primarily geared to juniors in high school. Many schools are now having sophomores take the PSAT as well just so these students have an earlier experience with the kinds of questions they will see on the SAT.
